Your CV stays on your device.
This page explains, in plain language, what Universal CV ID stores, where it is kept, and what you control.
The short version
- There is no account and no sign-up.
- Your CV is saved in your own browser, on your own device. We do not receive a copy.
- There are no cookies, no trackers and no adverts. We only see total visit counts from our web host, never what you type.
- The only time your CV leaves your device is when you download it or share a link yourself.
What is stored, and where
Everything you enter is kept in your browser's local storage for this site: your CV content, your versions, cover letters, the application tracker, an optional photo, and your light or dark mode choice.
It stays on the device and browser you used. It does not sync to your other devices, and we cannot see it, recover it or delete it for you, because we never have it.
Importing a CV
When you import a PDF, Word file or pasted text, the file is read inside your browser. It is not uploaded anywhere.
Share links and QR codes
A share link carries your CV inside the link itself. Nothing is saved on a server. That has three consequences worth knowing:
- Anyone who has the link can read it. Share it the way you would share the CV file.
- A link cannot be recalled. Once you have sent it, it keeps working for whoever holds it.
- A link is a snapshot. It does not change when you edit your CV; create a new link instead.
Before creating a link you choose whether your email, phone number and location are included. Your phone number is left out unless you switch it on.
Your Universal CV ID
Your ID is generated at random in your browser. Today it is not registered in any central database, and the CV behind it is self-declared: nobody has checked or verified it.
What the site itself loads
Fonts and code are served from this site, not from outside providers, and the pages are set up to block connections to other servers. So using the builder does not pass your details to third parties.
The site lives at cvid.app. The pages are hosted on GitHub Pages, and traffic passes through Cloudflare, which registers the name and protects and speeds up the site. As with any website, GitHub and Cloudflare may record technical details such as your IP address when pages are loaded. Cloudflare gives us totals only, such as the number of visits and which countries they come from. It cannot see your CV, because your CV is never sent to the site. See Cloudflare's privacy policy and GitHub's privacy statement.
Keeping a backup and deleting your data
- Back up: download your CV as a PDF, Word or JSON file from the Export step under Tailor. If you clear your browser data or switch device without a backup, your CV is gone.
- Delete: use "Start over" in the builder's Profile area, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. That removes everything, immediately and permanently.
Research and feedback
The "Feedback" links open a short survey hosted by Tally, a separate service. It is optional and anonymous: we do not ask for your name or email, and nothing from your CV is sent with it. Answers are only used to decide what to build next. Take the survey.
If this changes
Future features such as profiles and verification will need some data to be stored online. Before anything like that launches, this page will be updated, and nothing already in your browser will be uploaded without you choosing to.
